Stakeholder Mapping

My master’s dissertation focused on the Politics of Electricity Planning. For this, I produced a first series of maps to illustrate the Policy Advocacy Coalitions that were active at various points in the planning process. My analysis included scientifically tracking how these coalitions shifted their positions and the policy outcomes of their collective actions.

My early understanding of the value of robust stakeholder mapping evolved into a lasting fascination with mapping the significant body of work underway to achieve South Africa’s energy transition. Toward the end of 2019 I produced my first energy transition-focused map to illustrate all the public sector stakeholders that were actively involved at that point.

Given the extent to which new actors had entered the energy transition space, the 2024 update focused on the most influential stakeholders only. Significant updates were also made to the Government-led Climate programmes and related Transition-related finance elements. Research for the maps is ongoing, and I continue to rely on peer reviews before publishing each annual update.

On request I have been contracted to develop other maps that spin-off from the main energy transition stakeholder map, including gender-focused and justice-focused stakeholders working on energy transition in South Africa.
